Sizzling Santorini

Clear, blue skies, hot sun, blinding white houses, blue-domed churches …. sigh!

Glistening in the southern Aegean sea, Santorini is a summer utopia. With regular flights throughout summer, at affordable prices, the cost of your summer jaunt need not break the bank. Check out great value extras to further reduce the cost, such as parking at Gatwick, with a handy shuttle to the terminal door. A great way to start your holiday – chilled out and refreshed!

Santorini is a volcanic island, but you’ll be pleased to know they’re extinct! The capital, Fira, is a great place to visit, with a cable car transporting you around. Whilst you’re here, do a spot of shopping in one of the town’s many boutiques.

The island’s airport is a swift 20 minute transfer to the capital, with an efficient and relatively cheap but network, linking all major resorts and attractions, such as Akrotiri with its bronze-age monuments, and Agios Nikolaos monastery. Old churches and monasteries are dotted around the island, vying for you to explore, and the capital has an archaeological museum – a must visit for history buffs.

Seeing as you’re on holiday, you’ll want to spend a bit of time relaxing, so why not spend a few hours chilling by your hotel pool, or head to one of the island’s beautiful beaches? Monolithos is a popular sandy beach on the south-east coast, with a medieval castle nearby to explore. Due to its past volcanic connections, some beaches have dramatic black sand, with the popular resort of Kamari great example of this. Here you’ll find plentiful water-sports to cool down in the intense summer heat, which hits an average of 30 degrees in summer.

Nearer to the capital is Red Beach, with its almost red sand! The imposing scenery looks even more spectacular at sunset – if that’s at all possible!

When the beach becomes a little tiresome why not venture a little further, maybe with a trip to a local vineyard for some wine-tasting, or head to Palea Kameni and wallow in the hot mud baths – rumoured to be fantastically anti-aging and great for the skin. Of course, boat trips are a must, with a great opportunity to visit secluded coves and top up that tan. Alternatively, Atlantis submarine provides stunning underwater views.

Your pre-booked airport extras, such as Stansted airport parking, will come in very handy when hitting Santorini’s shops. Fira is fantastic for shopping and a great opportunity to pick up some souvenirs, such as ouzo!

The stars come out and Santorini’s glittering night-life wakes up. From world-class seafood restaurants to karaoke bars, there’s something for everyone.

The evening should of course start with a hearty meal, and there’s plenty of choice. Give traditional Greek food a try, be it fresh seafood, or the more traditional moussaka – delicious! However, if you’re picky with your food, don’t worry, there’s something for everyone.

When your dinner has settled, you have the choice of watching the sun go down with a glass of wine, or hitting party central. Whatever you choice, you’re catered for. Fira is full of night-life choices, as well as beach resorts, such as Kamari.

However you choose to spend your time on this idyllic sunshine island, you’re sure to come away with a smile on your face. You’ll be pleased with the savings from your pre-booked airport extras, try Manchester airport parking, and keep those extras pounds in your pocket.

Save some money and see a stunning island – is there any better combination?
